How to Accept Legal Papers Without Opening Your Door

Are you expecting to be served legal papers? If so, you might be concerned about staying safe while being served papers during the pandemic. In actuality, it is very possible to receive papers even if you never open your door.

If you are having most things delivered, you probably have a spot for deliveries outside your door, along with posted instructions. A private process server can leave papers in this location as long as your identity is confirmed and the process server knows you watched him put the papers in that location.

If you don’t have a spot for the process server to safely leave the papers, you may have to open your door. Your process server will likely be wearing a mask, and you can do so as well for additional risk management. You and the process server should still try to remain six feet apart as much as possible. If you can stoop to the floor of your porch or step, you can instruct the process server to leave it there with a weight on it to prevent the papers from blowing away.

You can also allow the private process server to leave the papers in your screen door, shutters, or mail slot. Any of these are acceptable as long as the process server can identify your identity beforehand.
